You made a promise to yourself that the last time was the last time. Evidently, you broke that promise because here you are, yet again, waiting for a miracle to happen.

Students are notorious procrastinators and they do it well too.

10 ways to overcome procrastination that actually work

1. Recognize that you are procrastinating. Just pay attention to your daily habits. Do you often look at a task and tell yourself you can do it tomorrow or next week? Do you make a to-do list for yourself and then convince yourself that you can push these things off until a later date?

Do you see a pattern here? You know it should be done today but somehow some way, you convince yourself that you can just push it off to a later date. From the end of this paragraph and on, you will learn how to break this habit.

2. Get It done. One of the things that we all love to do is put things off until tomorrow. If your professor assigns you an assignment, even if it is super simple and super easy, you always find a way to do it tomorrow. Treat your assignments like they can’t wait until tomorrow. If you have time today, then the least you can do is start your assignment. Even if you don’t finish it, starting it is still giving you a head start on the assignment.

When you get yourself into the habit of doing things as they come instead of waiting until tomorrow, you put yourself way ahead of the game. You’ll find that you have completed assignments that aren’t due until weeks later. Get your assignments done as soon as they are assigned to you, even if they aren’t due until a month later.

3. Tell yourself it needs to get done today. Thoughts start in your mind and then they cause action or a lack of action. If you make yourself believe that your assignment needs to be done now instead of tomorrow, you disrupt your old habits. The old you wants to wait until the last second to get the assignment done, but the new you wants to get it done as soon as possible. 

Move with a sense of urgency and get out of the habit of waiting until the last minute. Make yourself believe that it’s now or never and you will eventually form that habit moving forward.

4. Make a commitment to yourself. Just about everything starts out with some kind of commitment. If you’ve been a procrastinator your whole life, you probably won’t wake up tomorrow ready to stop procrastinating. You need to make a commitment to getting your assignments done ahead of time instead of waiting until the last minute. Be committed and don’t ever give up. When you’re trying to break out of old habits, it’s painful at first. But, the rewards are so amazing.

5. Do one thing at a time. It’s easy to become overwhelmed when you’re focused on the whole laundry list of things that need to get done for the week. Instead, try writing out 3 things a day from most important to least important. Start from the top and work your way down. Focus on one task at a time and do not jump ahead to the next task until the first task is done. 

Skipping around just leads to a bunch of incomplete work instead of work that is actually completed. If you only get to complete one thing from your list that day, give yourself a round of applause. Atleast you didn’t lay down and take a nap, you took action.

6. Tackle the hardest task first. The first thing to complete on your list should be the most challenging. Think about it, if you tackle the most difficult task first, the rest of the list will be easy. If you save the hardest thing for last, by the time you get to it, you will find an excuse for why it can wait until tomorrow. This is exactly what we don’t want to happen. Make sure you tackle the hardest thing first.

7. Take advantage of your peak time. What are peak times? When are you most productive? Do you get more work done in the early morning, at night or in the middle of the day? This is crucial to how much you’ll be able to get done on a day to day basis. If you absolutely hate waking up early, it would be a mistake to schedule your hardest task at 8am. If you work best in the middle of the day when all of your classes are done, start working on your to-do list at that time. 

Schedule your work when you are most productive. If you’re not sure when you are most productive, pay attention to your daily routine. You will find that you get through your to-do list much quicker at your peak hours versus on your most non-productive hours.

8. Remove all distractions. We live in a time where everyone scrolls through Instagram or Facebook when they’re bored. Keep your phone away from you while trying to get work done. This will minimize the amount of time you spend looking at your phone. Sometimes you’re sitting at your desk trying to get work done an hour has passed and you haven’t gotten anything done because you’ve been scrolling through Instagram for the past 55 minutes.

Sometimes friends call just to talk or to invite you to a party. This is why your phone should be on the other side of the room somewhere. If you haven’t yet developed the self-discipline needed to complete what’s in front of you before having fun, a friend calling you to go to a party can be detrimental to your success. Why? Because, of course a party sounds way more fun than doing research. So, you’ll probably end up abandoning what’s in front of you to go have fun.

9. Don’t try to be perfect. If you set out to complete 5 things for the day, don’t beat yourself up if you only get to complete one or two things. The most important thing is that you’re trying. You will eventually get to a point where completing 5 tasks is no sweat.

10. Reward yourself. Don’t be so hard on yourself, every time you complete something on your to-do list, reward yourself for what you’ve done. If you had 3 things on your to-do list and you finished one or all of those tasks, reward yourself. Think of an incentive to give yourself every time you complete a task. It could be, binge watching your favorite show, hanging out with friends or just ordering your favorite meal. Give yourself something to look forward to at the end of each task.
